Echoes of the Alt-Right: U.S. Disinformation in the 2025 Romanian Presidential Elections

Romania’s 2025 presidential contest has taken place amid historic uncertainty. The annulment of the 2024 presidential election by the Constitutional Court, following classified intelligence on foreign interference, exposed systemic vulnerabilities and heightened public skepticism regarding the integrity of the democratic process. The subsequent exclusion of high-profile ultranationalist candidate Călin Georgescu further polarized the electorate and intensified the scrutiny of both domestic and foreign actors, especially in light of the documented cases of Russian interference within Romania’s electoral process.

But Russia is not the only source of disinformation. In this new report, SCPS dives into the discourses of the American Alt-Right, tracking the major disinformation narratives originating in the USA attempting to undermine social cohesion and spark divisions within Romanian society. By making use of our Narrative Intelligence approach, we investigate the public debate on X and Telegram, and demonstrate how innovative technologies, such as AI and LLMs, could be deployed to conduct narrative analysis at scale.
